Zoning changed approved for Aylmer Academy renovation project

In a divided vote, council approved in mid-April a zoning change for the historic Aylmer Academy located at 170, rue Principale. However, a public the changes proposed will also need to be discussed during a public consultation at City Hall on May 7, starting at 6 pm.

The owner, Construction GMR Associés, requested a zoning change to allow up to 159 units and the construction of six storeys.

The owner’s plan includes the renovation and expansion of the current building and the demolition of the accessory building in the back.

The planning advisory committee approved the proposed change in late March and municipal services have received studies for the project to go forward, including the sunlight study and a traffic study.

The Aylmer Academy was built in 1861 and served as an educational institution for Aylmer’s first English community, notably its elites. In 1911, a back wing and an extra floor is added. Unfortunately, a fire in 1925 considerably damages the roof, but repairs are carried out. The Western Quebec School Board eventually moves in and occupies the building for decades before relocating to Katimavik Street in 2007.
