LETTER
Whose birthday party?
Signs went up on Aylmer’s main street, and I am shocked by the pretension of the message: “It’s our birthday!” It isn’t my birthday, nor my people’s.
My origins are mixed, including Algonquin and Métis. If this has done anything for me, it has taken away any desire to celebrate their establishing themselves here. And now, including me in their birthday party? Pompous! For me – and I’m not alone -- Canada marks a time of ending and of continuing difficulties. Ignoring all this by getting drunk on Parliament Hill speaks volumes about the kind of people who would assume everyone who drives past these signs in Aylmer wants to join their little party of conquest. Call it what it is, please!
