LETTER
Where’s the good news for 2019?
I think it is important for all of us to reflect on the good things that have happened over this year that is now ending. Watching and reading the media, all we get is the bad news, “the worst the better!”, apparently. Yet, with all the negatives – Trump and Johnson, Putin, Syria, constant shootings in the USA, upheavals in so many countries of citizens demanding freedom – all these have a positive side (which the media ignores). Whether Trump is impeached or not, he has been called – and even if he escapes, that penalty hangs over him (and over anyone who might replace him). The same for all these stories, each has a positive, as far as I can see.
It sounds silly, but some publications have a “good news page”. That’s not a bad idea, if only to remind us that everything is not terrible and getting worse by the minute! Or maybe a page of news that isn’t very important but which reminds us all of our common humanity?
Events like the climate marches and the activism of the kids are very encouraging – and let’s not say they are too late!! Why do we always have to punch ourselves in the face – or maybe it’s a punch to our hearts?
