What I heard at the debate!
The Liberal incumbent (Pontiac) claims to be a defender of the environment. During the debate at “The British”, he repeatedly stressed protecting our land and waters. His voting record reveals a different picture.
For all his experience as an environmental lawyer, he has been more concerned with defending the oil and nuclear industries than his constituents. He has never insisted that the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission comply with minimal international nuclear standards. His only response to criticism by the International Atomic Energy Agency on Canada’s lack of radioactive waste strategy and the CNSC’s substandard practices, was to reassure us his government has asked SNC Lavalin to revise its plan. He has no problem with piling multiple football fields’ volumes of nuclear waste 6-7 storeys high on porous rock, near wetlands on the Ottawa River, nor, it would seem, with letting one of the country’s most corrupt corporations develop Canada’s radioactive waste disposal strategy for us, on a for-profit basis – costing us $1B/year!
“Better than Scheer!” is not good enough. An honest government would never permit radioactive waste to be piled high beside a critical drinking water source, nor would it entrust our country’s radioactive waste disposal to an infamously unethical corporation.
Please consider these facts as you think about whom to vote for October 21.
Denise Giroux,
NDP Candidate
