Vote Compass: How do your views align with party platforms?
Election season is upon us and brings with it the ever-present question of who to vote for and why. While there are many reasons to vote or not to vote for a certain party, figuring out which party most conforms with one’s values and social ideals can be a difficult task and that’s where online services like Vote Compass come into play.
Vote Compass is an award-winning civic engagement application developed by political scientists which shows you how your views align with those of the candidates running for election.
The service is completely free and available online with no login, and no registration required. The only information the survey system requires is a postal or zip code to determine your district, electorate or riding.
Typically 30 questions long, the survey takes about 10 minutes to complete, after which it will show you percentage-wise how your political views line up with those of the major running parties, with the exception of the People’s Party of Canada (PPC) who did not participate in the poll.
Once completed, the system also allows you to take a more in-depth look at each party’s platforms with comparisons by topic, candidate statements, and various other options in order to compare and contrast.
A trusted system used in various different elections worldwide since 2011, the 2019 Canadian federal elections Vote Compass is being hosted by CBC and VOX POP Labs and can be filled out on votecompass.cbc.ca/canada/.
