Gatineau has once again closed Vanier Road in North Aylmer. Construction crews will resurface the road between Cook Road and Vernon Street. The road work will last 25 days wrapping up on October 2. However, the road will only be totally closed until September 13. The city indicated that it will respect municipal noise regulations.
Besides resurfacing the road, crews will replace the culvert, reshape the ditch and carry out work on the foundation. Crews will set a detour route.
During previous years, Vanier Road has been closed numerous times and for various lengths of time. Deemed unsafe, Vanier Road between Pink Road and Vernon Street was closed from November 2013 to January 2014. The city had closed Vanier Road for more than 60 days following unauthorized excavation work by a business within the street’s right-of-way.
City officials had worried about the road’s stability. The city finally reinforced the road’s east embankment near the quarry’s entrance. A dirt barrier on a high-embankment was also excavated to reduce the height to less than 5.5 meters while the bottom of the slope was backfilled to obtain a height of 5.5 meters. The work cost the city $1.3 million.
