Twelve environmental projects funded under the 2022 Green Fund

As part of the Green Fund, Gatineau will be funding 12 projects aimed at improving or protecting the environment this year. The call for projects was launched last September and eligible organizations (i.e. non-profit and public) had until November 1 to submit their applications.
The grants awarded to the 12 selected projects represent an investment of more than $150,000 by the City of Gatineau for 2022. These projects include:
    •    Inventory of terrestrial and wetland environments in the Deschênes waterfront park: $3,478.80 grant to Deschênes Park Alliance
    •    Wychwood neighbourhood revegetation: $3,744 grant to Friends of Wychwood
    •    Greening project and development of a therapeutic trail: $25,000 grant to the Centre intégré de santé et de services sociaux de l'Outaouais
    •    Écoles de la rivière en Outaouais: $13,812 grant to Ottawa Riverkeeper
    •    Une cour de possibilités!: $25,000 grant to Euclide-Lanthier elementary school

The Green Fund supports projects (study, environmental event, awareness-raising project or structuring project) that correspond to the orientations of the environmental policy and are in line with one of its themes, which are as follows: preserving water resources, improving water quality, preserving the soil, preserving biodiversity, reducing energy consumption, offering a better quality of life, and ensuring a sustainable and responsible approach to waste management.

The creation of the Green Fund is the concretization of the partnership of various actors of the field aimed at achieving the objectives set out in the Environmental Policy. In addition to establishing partnerships within the field, the Green Fund’s main objectives are to support the implementation of the Environmental Policy's Action Plan; to recognize and promote environmental organizations and contribute to the success of their projects; to make use of municipal resources to complement community resources; and, to promote environmental excellence as well as the City of Gatineau’s influence in the field.

The budget for the Green Fund grant envelope is determined annually. The amounts awarded per project can represent up to 75% of the total value of the activity for projects costing $5,000 or less, and up to 50% of the total value of the activity for projects over $5,000, up to a maximum grant of $25,000 (or $15,000 for an event).

The City has invested over $2.7 million in environmental projects since the Green Fund was created in 2008. Thus, hundreds of projects have been carried out.

Under the 2021 Green Fund, Gatineau awarded grants totaling $140,750 to 14 environmental projects, including:

    •    An interpretive trail and educational materials for the Boucher Forest: $21,653 grant to the Boucher Forest Foundation
    •    Vert chez moi: $2,613 grant to the Office d'habitation de l'Outaouais (OHO)
    •    Hull Hospital greening project: $25,000 grant to the Centre intégré de santé et de services sociaux de l’Outaouais
    •    LA FRIP’ GRATUITE: $3,705 grant to the Université du Québec en Outaouais (UQO)

Under the 2020 Green Fund, Gatineau awarded grants totaling $226,300 to 25 environmental projects, including:

    •    Control of buckthorn and other invasive species: $3,744 grant to Friends of Wychwood
    •    BioBlitz in the Boucher Forest: $5,590 grant to the Boucher Forest Foundation
    •    Boucher Forest Month 2020: $13,923 grant to the Boucher Forest Foundation
    •    Reforestation Mapping: $3,748.90 grant to Friends of Aylmer Marina
    •    Rainwater harvesting in Old Aylmer: $3,729.90 grant to Les Partenaires du secteur Aylmer
    •    Youth Climate Summit – Outaouais 2020: $12,500 grant to Enviro Éduc-Action
