Tree felled in Wychwood renews calls for more oversight

A mature pine tree was de-branched and chopped to a third of its height April 17 on Pine Street in Wychwood. Neighbours told the Bulletin the tree was over 70 years old and in good health. A Gatineau spokesperson informed the Bulletin that no tree-cutting permit was issued for the property. The city bylaw governing  tree-cutting stipulates that if half a tree is cut, or if a tree is cut enough to kill it, a permit is required. Amis de Wychwood – Friends of Wychwood spokesperson, Christiane Therien, told the Bulletin: “The reason this neighbourhood is prized is the trees. We have mature trees like no other neighbourhood and there are city rules in place to ensure they are protected. What will it take for residents to follow the rules?”

The Bulletin did not hear back from the property owner at press time.
