LETTER
The most important petition in Canadian history?
On November 2, 2016, a young man in Kitchener, Ontario heard Justin Trudeau suggest that maybe electoral reform wasn't so important anymore. As someone who had voted for the Liberals because of the promise of electoral reform, and convinced friends to do so on the basis of that promise, he felt a responsibility to do something. He decided to start an e-petition to Parliament, petition 616: https://petitions.parl.gc.ca/en/Petition/Details?Petition=e-616.
Since the Liberals announced they are killing their promise to Make Every Vote Count, this petition has exploded. Over 118,000 people have signed it to date. It's already the biggest e-petition to Parliament since e-petitions started, and it's possibly the biggest petition to Parliament in the past quarter-century.
This petition ends March 2 at 11:20 AM.
The government can still reverse its decision. But Liberal MPs are claiming that "nobody cares about this" and party insiders tell us "we aren't receiving enough blowback". They figure that breaking this promise won't cost them enough votes.
Let's work together to prove them wrong, and get electoral reform back on the table!
1) Can you work with others locally to collect signatures? Sign up here and we'll put you in touch with others in your community who also want to collect signatures. There are many creative ways to amplify our impact by working together!
2) Help get more signers by joining our Sign the Petition event on Facebook, and then invite your Facebook friends to the group - this will help us amplify our impact quickly!
In 1949, the petition to Parliament in support of the Bill of Rights became the largest petition in history, with 625,000
signatures.
We can show the Liberal government that in 2017, Canadians believe in casting a vote that counts, and want to be governed by parties representing a genuine majority.
Thank you for helping us to send a huge message to the Liberal Party that the electoral promise matters to Canadians.
