The burden of protecting our civil rights 

My humble apologizes for taking up space on your letters page, space that should be rightfully reserved for Robert L. Thompsett in his valiant efforts to warn us of the dire threats to our civil rights.  While the rest of us wallow in ignorant bliss, Mr Thompsett with his keen insight is not fooled by seemingly innocuous measure such as photo radars, city speed limits and other municipal regulations claimed to make life safer for citizens. Thanks to Mr Thompsett, the city councillors have been unmasked in their dastardly design to obliterate our civil rights. He knows that seemingly civilized rules are only a ruse to suppress our civil rights. He knows that in a truly free society, everyone should be able to do whatever they please. I note that Mr Thompsett’s home country is the United Kingdom. It must be a heavy burden indeed for the enlightened man to come out to the colonies and try to enlighten the ignorant masses. The frustration must be neverending for him as he is forced to obey city speed limits and is even prevented from driving on the left-hand side of the road as in his home country.  How can we be so naive as to ignore where such restrictions will lead to? 

 

Given Mr Thompsett’s acumen and altruism in taking on the thankless task of enlightening us, I submit that he deserves a wider and more global stage than that of little Aylmer and its unseeing citizens.  Let us not be selfish and keep Mr Thompsett only to ourselves. Let us encourage him to go on to a greater stage he so richly deserves. Halloween is coming and we need more writers of scary fairy tales, just as we need more writers of humour who, whether intentionally or unintentionally, are amusing.
