The Bulletin’s rightwing writers 

Barry Stevens [letter, December 3] complains about the “right-wing slant” of much of the material that appears in the Bulletin. That’s strange. The Bulletin I receive has an editorial page that leans distinctly left, and the socio-political columnists it carries do likewise. All would likely refer to themselves as liberal, because it’s more genteel, more “progressive” [than the term “socialist”]. In this, Barry Stevens and Bernie Sanders are their moral superiors; they don’t hide their affection for a debased, debunked, and failed philosophy.

What socialists don’t seem to understand is that people don’t want to be treated as though they can’t cope; they don’t want to be wards of the State. They have a visceral dislike for those who think themselves superior, better equipped than the average Joe to decide what’s best for him. They don’t appreciate being looked down upon, treated as though all they’re good for is a vote, especially when all this contempt is neatly hidden beneath a cloak of spurious concern. 

That Mr Stevens has perceived an imbalance, in this paper, of articles favouring individual responsibility over collectivist statism points to [his] intellectual myopia or serious paranoia.
