LETTER

The Gathering of Leaders here, December 13, inspired community leaders to share significant concerns so as to create solutions relevant to today.
Last month, at a Natural Panel Discussion hosted by the National Capital Commission, I learned that municipalities across Canada have been paying their bills by getting 70% of their income from developers! This explains why our cities, trees, and fertile land are being replaced by cement! At what cost to our quality of life?
Climate change calls us to wake up and finally hear the wisdom of the indigenous peoples and to connect us to our own indigenous hearts. As mature trees die, our drinking water is also under siege. Who can we elect to be our voices of care?
This Fall, visiting a friend in Hull Hospital, I learned there were only two orderlies for twenty-eight patients on night shift, and only three during the day! Changing shifts, there were none. She had once to lie in her own feces for forty-five minutes! What does this say of our society’s health care system and the stress on sick people and on our precious caregivers and all Spiritual Leaders? What does it say about our elected politicians?
And now we hear that Gatineau City Council is targeting the removal of tax exemptions on spiritual places of worship -- to find an extra $1.5 million dollars? If so, we citizens must really get involved and either run or be sure to vote. Canada as a Nation must evolve.
