Taxi and Uber drivers must now provide receipts

Revenu Québec announces mandatory measures in the paid passenger transportation sector as of November 1rst. Individuals travelling by taxi, limousine, or hiring a company like Uber, or lift, will now receive a receipt after service is complete. According to Revenu Québec they decided to implement this measure as similar models of sales recording have been successful in other sectors, such as the restaurant industry. Revenu Québec has already started receiving invoices for transactions carried out by registered operators.

The driver must also provide Revenu Québec with information on each transaction using a new technology that Revenu Québec has developed. This technology is an application for mobile devices that the driver will use to detail each transaction. The app does not affect the payment method or transaction between the client and the driver.

Revenu Québec says that this announcement is made possible because of their collaborations with various industry players. The organization worked with drivers to develop and test the app and test last fall.

“These new measures have made some aspects easier and some more difficult” says Joe Abou, President of Aylmer taxi and Ton Taxi “It is useful administratively because all the information we need to provide to Revenu Québec goes directly to them. However, the process of printing another receipt, after one is given for their debit transaction can slow drivers down meaning they can make less money in their work day. We don’t mind the new measures but the technology aspect of it could be improved to be easier for drivers.”

Additionally, Revenu Québec inspectors will oversee activities to ensure that drivers and companies are following the new measure and that they meet and understand the obligations. Revenu Québec has implemented a subsidy program that can cover up to 100% of the costs of implementing the new mandatory measures.
