LETTER
Symbolic subscriptions
As the first of April is nowhere in sight, I am taking last week’s editorial concerning “Symbolic Subscriptions” seriously. I am pleased to be able to support local journalism in this region. I hope this effort, plus obtaining the services of a digitally literate and creative intern, ensures a greater presence of local news and debate.
I had intended to quote from the editorial which I read earlier in the week. Unfortunately, it is Friday and the Publi-sac has yet to make an appearance and the editorial has yet to make it online. I will still make my donation and trust you are working on both problems.
I must admit I had that money set aside for another purchase; however, I have been foiled by the government of Quebec. I am referring to the non-existence of marijuana dispensaries in the Outaouais. I was dismayed to discover that there will be no physical location to purchase your preferred product in this region of Quebec. Quebec City will have two locations, Montreal will have four and the rest of the province, excluding the Outaouais, will have six. We may be privileged to have a location by 2020.
The money invested in this newly legal industry is staggering. The taxes it will generate will be no less impressive. We are once again left to patronize Ottawa instead of here, unless we prefer the convenience of supporting the illegal part of the industry. Just why did this process become legal?
