Signs of life?
I would like to present some other arguments in response to the June 1 editorial, "Signs of Life". Whereas the noise problem is well grasped by the editor, I think the real issue is motorists who could hit a child playing on the street.
The need of Canadian children to be more active does not warrant letting them play anywhere. We can't assume that all motorists will be driving responsibly any more than we can assume that all children will always be watchful for danger. Such assumptions could put a child's life at risk.
Not everyone works only on weekdays, and of those who do, many still need to use their vehicle after work and on weekends. Giving priority to non-motorized vehicles during those times would not be any safer.
When streets are opened to pedestrians during festivals, they are usually closed to motorists. Need we ask why?
