Seniors project lands in Gatineau
Gatineau is part of a pilot-project directed by the association “Vivre en Ville” (Living in the City). Along with Châteauguay and Plessisville, Gatineau will participate in planning living environments conducive to healthy aging.
The project’s main objective is to equip municipal authorities to favour policies and management practices promoting a healthy and safe lifestyle for seniors. Richard Bégin, Deschênes councillor and Chair of Gatineau’s Seniors Committee, is pleased with the project.
"The issues of an aging population are important for municipalities. Seniors’ issues must be taken into account. This project will enable us to improve our understanding of living environments. The recommendations will be more conducive to healthy aging," said Mr. Bégin.
The heart of the project is to improve seniors’ accessibility to essential shops and services -- grocery stores, pharmacies, and recreation centres. By encouraging the appropriate placement of these facilities, they will encourage active lives for seniors.
The Quebec City association “Vivre en Ville”, with an office in Gatineau, received a provincial grant of $98,000 to put this project in place. The over-all goal is creation of sustainable communities throughout Québec.
Gatineau now has a committee with “Vivre en Ville” reps, city staff, other specialists, and Councillor Bégin.
In Gatineau, close to 12% of the population (275,400) is 65 and over. A growing number of seniors are also living alone.
