Richard Bégin running for Action Gatineau in Deschênes
Uncontested, Richard Bégin won the Action Gatineau nomination race for the Deschênes Ward this winter. One of the most experienced Action Gatineau councillors, this will be Mr Bégin’s second election campaign.
Elected in 2013 in Deschênes by defeating the incumbent Alain Riel, Bégin has played a significant role in the present administration, occupying, among other positions, the demanding position of Chair of the Advisory Planning Committee (CCU). As Chairman, Bégin led the city-wide planning reform. Mr Bégin also chairs the Seniors’ Commission and the Demolition Committee.
Besides his committee and commission work, Mr Bégin also oversaw significant ward projects during his first term, including the repaving and reconfiguration of Lucerne Boulevard, McConnell Road, and the refurbishment of a segment of Vanier Road in Old Deschênes. Vanier Road’s overhaul is part of the city’s flagship project to revitalize the Old Deschênes neighbourhood, “overlooked for over 60 years” said Bégin. Mr Bégin also has a distinguished career in heritage and historical matters.
If re-elected, Mr Bégin told the Bulletin, he will focus his energy on reforming public works and the city’s infrastructure services, two services he believes are the source of frustration for many residents in dealing with the city.
In 2013, Mr Bégin won the election in Ward 3 with 54% of the votes.
