LETTER
Racism in Canada
I am writing in response to a letter by Ronald Lefebvre in the June 10th Aylmer Bulletin. It was rather blind, it came from an ignorant and privileged perspective and is completely tone deaf.
I am disappointed in the Bulletin’s editorial board for publishing a letter that states “Canada is certainly not racist”. I can only conclude that you are all white. And that this person doesn’t know any people of colour. If you do not see it as your duty not to publish lies when you know the truth has been documented, in this case for 100s of years, then it should be.
Our black friends and colleagues are down. They are suffering. They are grieving. They are tired of fighting. It is well beyond time for us white folk to stand up, acknowledge our ignorance, our privilege and our attitudes that other, belittle and demean people who have different skin than ours. If your readers don’t understand what I am talking about, then they can grab a book (bookstores have entire sections dedicated to this right now). They can follow black and people of colour on social media. It is up to us to educate ourselves. I certainly had to confront my own privilege in the last several weeks.
We must listen. We must self-examine. We must change and do better.
