Gatineau invokes its right to rebuild

Gatineau has decided to move ahead with rebuilding Queen’s Park Road, rue Hurtubise, and rue Fer à Cheval, which all suffered major damage from the historic spring flooding. These roads border water, so any work done to them requires permits from the Ministry of the Environment (MDDELCC) to ensure the repairs are not a threat to the eco-system.

City council’s Executive Committee agreed, June 14, that the work should go ahead so residents in those areas can have proper access to their homes. The mayor dismissed concerns about additional certification by Quebec City, stating, “We have a right to rebuild the roads to what they were before, not to add anything new, but to rebuild what was already there.”

The Ministry has commented, “The Minister understands the urgent nature of the situation and will quickly deliver the emergency authorizations. The proposed works on these roads pose little environmental risk”.

Rebuilding the three sites is estimated to cost $650,000 and to be completed by mid-July 2017.
