Police seek sexual predator in Aylmer

Responding to a number of reports involving indecent behaviour in several neighbourhoods in Aylmer, Gatineau Police (SPVG) are on the lookout for a sexual predator, and urges the population to be vigilant. According to a press release issued by the SPVG on June 29, the SPVG has received a number of reports since June 24 about a man entering people’s homes and masturbating.

It stated that all the incidents have occurred in the Aylmer sector, especially near chemin Fraser, rue Wychwood, rue Juniper, and rue Armour. Residents also told the Bulletin there were incidents near Front Street and Eardley.

The SPVG added that it’s also investigating a sexual assault incident in the area, which may be related to the others, that took place following a break-in on June 26. It stated that the victim was able to get the harasser to leave. Witnesses say the police seized his bicycle, gave chase during a search involving the canine unit but didn’t manage to track him down.

Intending to take all necessary measures to keep people safe, the SPVG has notably augmented its police presence in Aylmer. Noting that its investigation into the matter is moving forward rather well, the SPVG said it plans to announce new information on the situation without compromising the state of the investigations when the time is right.

SPVG spokesperson Renée Anne St-Amant said she could not specify the number of incidents that have taken place, since the situation is ongoing, but noted that at least three have been accounted for. Residents are encouraged to take preventative measures to avoid break-ins -- always keep doors and easily-accessible windows closed and locked, especially at night or when home alone, and even when it’s really hot and humid.

Emphasizing the importance of not trivializing sexual assault incidents, and being vigilant about one’s surroundings, the SPVG urges people to report suspicious activity on their property or in their area by calling (819) 246-0222 or 9-1-1 for emergencies.
