Police issue zero-tolerance notice for Parc des Cèdres

Gatineau police (SPVG) are to enhance patrolling in Parc des Cèdres, along with other hot spots in the city, mainly to crack down on public alcohol consumption, leaving waste and creating disorder. Those caught drinking in public spaces may be fined up to $200.

According to a press release issued on June 30, police officers will have zero-tolerance for disorder and alcohol consumption at the Marina and Parc des Cèdres. It noted that the SPVG had initially attempted to address the situation by communicating with residents about the park’s rules while raising awareness about COVID-19 safety guidelines, which didn’t work effectively.

Aylmer councillor Audrey Bureau told the Aylmer Bulletin that she agreed with the city’s intervention tactic, noting that police had already informed residents of park usage regulations and that problems only got worse instead of improving. “We didn’t have a choice but to move on to a more repressive measure,” Bureau said. “It caused a lot of issues in the neighbourhood and it was a great nuisance on the beach with garbage, alcohol and marijuana consumption and a lot of people didn’t respect social distancing.”
