Pit bulls
People who care about pit bulls should support laws requiring them to be spayed or neutered, as the law that recently took effect in Montreal does. Preventing more pit bull births is the key to preventing their abuse, homelessness, and suffering.
Pit bulls are the breed of choice for dogfighters and other thugs who beat and starve them to make them frustrated, aggressive, and unpredictable. Trapped on chains or in filthy pens, they are often frightened, diseased, and scarred. They also constitute a disproportionate number of dogs in animal shelters and are the number one dog represented in many of those facilities’ euthanasia rooms.
PETA works every day to prevent more pit bulls from being born only to end up like this. We’ve sterilized 1,245 pit bulls so far this year at little or no cost to their guardians and have provided free transportation to and from the surgery if needed.
Mandating that pit bulls be spayed or neutered—as all dogs should be, given the overpopulation crisis—is crucial to protecting them.
