“Perceptions from the other side”

 

In discussions of Canadian participation in the three Baltic states, I heard a lot from the specialists, and then on TV I heard a woman say: 'It depends how it is going to be perceived from the other side!'

I could not believe it! This is a clear understanding of the “Duo-set” (Rasto 1977). The voice belonged to Peggy Mason from the Rideau Institute.  She was right on the nail! We are making progress after all!

My own experience in “Duo-set” was with its introduction to the public in the article “Sculptor pursuing art between part-time jobs” (The Citizen, pg 40, December 3, 1977). Though it was my honest and progressive thought in pursuit of “Multiple Sculpture” (Ed: Mr Hlavina’s innovation), I did not take into account the “perception” of our political establishment at the time. And it just blew into my life (also my family) with adverse consequences. There was no “talk”, just adverse consequences -- very similar to Russia. I have become the 'Persona non grata'.  

And though I had a very successful solo exposition in the National Library in 1981, with positive appreciation from public, I was to learn that all the doors in Canada to me were shut and locked! I thus learned a lesson in omitting to take into consideration the perception(s) on the other side, while I was presenting the “Duo-set”. In the end, we all lost something.

One door closes; another opens -- I went international and succeeded (USA 1982-85, Japan 1986-88, Switzerland, France, etc.) and on all levels. I learned and progressed, as will Russia, with us or without us. In both cases, it is a loss for Canada as well.

Therefore, I can in full honesty say: “Thank you Peggy Mason from the Rideau Institute”! For this is the first and the most important “Forward Thought” I have had the honour to witness in my life. I salute you, Peggy Mason from the Rideau Institute!
