Class action against school boards
Payments to parents are starting to come in
Parents of students in 68 of Quebec’s 72 school boards have begun receiving their cheques related to the out-of-court settlement reached last fall in connection with the class action on school supplies fees. In total, $153.5 million will be distributed by early summer.
Each parent will receive $24.09 per child per school year between 2009-2010 or 2010-2011, depending on the school board, until 2016-2017 for a maximum of $192.72 per family.
The Ministry of Education points out that the Education Act ensures that young people “have the right to free textbooks and teaching materials required for the teaching of the curriculum”.
Cheques were scheduled to be phased in between February 5, 2019 and July 4, 2019, but this period could be extended for various reasons.
