Organ donations, sign up now
April 1 was the start of Organ Donation Month. Over 4,000 Canadians are on a growing waitlist for a life-saving organ. Hundreds will die in 2018 due to the lack of organs for transplant.
Approximately 68% of Canadians are not registered to donate their organs upon their death. Surprising, given that almost 90% of Canadians say that they support organ donation. No doubt many who are not registered would be grateful and more than willing to accept an organ to save their, or a loved one’s, life, should they need one. It is difficult to understand this apathy and ignorance toward something that saves and improves human lives.
The organs from one deceased donor can save up to 8 lives and their tissue improve the lives of up to 75. Donation of an organ not only saves a life, it improves the quality of life of the recipient. A new organ gives them independence and self-worth by allowing them to return to work, earn an income, have time to enjoy life, family and friends, to be free of pain and discomfort, be sexually active, travel, and so much more!
Canada has some of the best organ-donation doctors, nurses, and programs in the world. The risks associated with organ donation are very low. Many occupations and activities, especially extreme sports, are often more risky than living organ donations.
If you are one of the 68% not registered for deceased organ donation, take a minute to walk in the shoes of a person needing an organ. Imagine what it might be like knowing your, or a loved one’s, days are numbered waiting for an organ; imagine seeing them die waiting.
Please indicate your wish to be a deceased organ donor by signing your health card. For living organ donation contact Canadian Blood Services for a hospital with a program nearest you. Canada can do much better in 2018!
