LETTER
Open letter to the Prime Minister and the Premiers
As you know, front line health care staff (nurses and patient care attendants) are made up mainly of members of black communities’ members and other racialized new immigrants, some of whom are awaiting confirmation of their status.
These workers are poorly paid, and often paid less than other employees in the same position, especially those who work for staffing agencies. Many are not unionized and are afraid to speak up about unfair treatment, since they have unconfirmed immigration status.
LeaderPOL - therefore recommends the following:
1. Equal work and pay for all employees, regardless of whether they are registered with a staffing agency, any other private company or with the government.
2. Staffing agencies and any other private company employing these people, and/or who have contracts with the government, should be regulated to put an end to these abuses.
3. Nurses and patient care attendants’ salaries should be revisited, so that pay equity is achieved for occupations that require the same effort and risk.
