LETTER

OK, so it was raining . . .

 

With a new administration elected to council to run the city that I live in, I would like to thank some of those that made this election possible, including...

My uncle, John Wilson-Law, who lost his life being shot down over Ethiopia in 1940 by the Italian Air Force.

My uncle, Flight Sergeant Barry Dawson Wilson-Law who was shot down during the Normandy Landings and had to be rescued with considerable loss of life to and by the French Resistance.

My grandfather, Sergeant Daniel Power whose left arm and half his leg were blown off by one of the Kaiser's machine guns at Passchendale in 1917.

My grandfather, Private Ernest A Thompsett who was 95% deafened by the British Artillery in the trenches.

And 100 million others and more who were wounded, gassed, killed or simply were lost without trace in the last century alone simply to ensure that we, the generations who come after them, have this opportunity once every four years to put a small cross on a piece of paper in the quest to find good people, selfless people and inspired people who would run this city and so many like ours for the benefit of those who live here.

I hope that we have chosen well, and that those now elected are the best in our community to do this and that they are worthy of this so costly right, this priceless gift of democracy, that they who came before us laid down their lives to provide for us as a legacy, a right that six in every ten persons in the city regarded as not worth a trip out in the rain to use.
