October: Canadian Islamic History Month

Did you know? Since October 2007, Canada has observed Canadian Islamic History Month annually. On the occasion of this celebration, which this year is also the 15th anniversary of the proclamation of the month of October, a number of events celebrating Islamic culture were organized in the National Capital Region. An exhibition organised by the association Ottawa Muslims took place at Jean Pigott Place, located in the perimeter of Ottawa City Hall, on 6 October. Admission was free, and citizens were able to admire translations of verses from the Quran in several languages, works of art and artefacts from various regions of the world and Canada. Henna (an art form that uses the ink from the henna plant to create temporary tattoos on the skin) and hijab booths were also set up to highlight the exhibition. The Honourable Greg Fergus, Member of Parliament for Hull-Aylmer, attended the event with representatives of Ottawa Muslims. The Liberal politician also shared some words to mark Canadian Islamic History Month via his social media channels: "This month and every month, let's continue to support our Muslim neighbours in the face of adversity and celebrate all the wonderful qualities, achievements and impacts they have and continue to have across the country”. The Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Housing, Diversity and Inclusion, also highlighted October 2022: "Canada is the country it is because of its people and Muslim Canadians have contributed greatly to the overall success of our society. From science to business, from academia to the arts and everything in between, Muslim Canadians have helped shape the modern Canada we all know today. These diverse communities have a range of rich traditions and share a deep history from which we can all learn”. He also shared some thoughts on combating Islamophobia: "As we celebrate the many achievements and contributions of Muslim Canadians, we must also recognize that Islamophobia and hate crimes against members of their communities are an unacceptable reality. We will continue to stand with them in the face of hate. We remain committed to appointing the first ever Special Representative on Islamophobia. In October, I encourage all Canadians to join local events that highlight the history of Canadian Muslim communities. Together, let us continue to build an even more welcoming and inclusive country, where everyone has a chance to succeed. Happy Canadian Islamic History Month!”.
