LETTER
Now the work begins ...
With the federal campaign over, tackling systemic inequality and preventing the worst of climate change must continue. Our NDP caucus will work hard to see universal pharmacare put in place along with real measures to transition away from fossil fuels toward ecological energies and policies.
I tried, during the campaign, to point out the extent to which the Liberals have been captured by big companies like Facebook and SNC Lavalin; the latter’s dangerous (and profitable) plan to pile radioactive waste beside the Ottawa River is but one maddening example. We need to press the government to develop a national nuclear waste management strategy and set effective safety standards which take into account public safety and environmental protection, currently missing from the mandate given the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission. (What’s in a name?)
It should be clear to everyone that it is not safe to simply “trust” in the government to do the right thing, whatever promises were made by the elected MP.
Informal round tables
Our MPs and the NDP riding association in Pontiac will work to bring progressive ideas to the table and to hold the government accountable. During the next months we want to hear from Pontiac voters and will be organizing informal round tables in different communities. We hope you will consider joining our team, as citizen engagement is the only way to make democracy work. The next months are crucial to advancing climate solutions.
I wish to thank the local papers and radio stations (in Fort-Coulonge and Maniwaki) for their extensive coverage of campaign issues, and the opportunity to get my message out. These local organizations reminded voters that their choice lies in the selection of one individual to be their Member of Parliament, and of how they need to look closely at the record of the incumbent and the abilities and engagement of those who would take their place. We do not vote for the Prime Minister directly in our Parliamentary system.
I also want to thank all of the volunteers and supporters of my campaign. We expect to see leadership from all Members of Parliament to ensure the world moves in a direction which better serves people, in Canada and on the planet.
Denise Giroux
Pontiac NDP Candidate
