No right on red at Aylmer-Vanier?
Bulletin Staff
Deschênes councillor Mike Duggan is concerned that city council will ban right-turns-on-red northbound on Vanier from Aylmer Road. Mr Duggan said, November 20, this would only make traffic worse in Aylmer, already suffering serious congestion.
The municipal notice of presentation includes other intersections, such as the northbound La Vérendrye Ouest Boulevard and Ernest-Gaboury Street corner. Gilles Carpentier, Carrefour-de-l’Hôpital councillor, said this change has been anticipated by residents in his district.
Other intersections which may lose their right-turn-on-red include the southbound intersection of Maloney Boulevard West and Saint-Louis Street, the northbound intersection of La Vérendrye Boulevard East and Main Street and the eastbound intersection of La Vérendrye Boulevard East and Main Street.
Initially presented as a measure to save gasoline, allowing right turns on a red became common practice in North America in 1975. Only the Island of Montreal and New York City prohibit all right-on-red turns in North America.
