New lanes for Champlain Bridge
Everybody’s talking about express lanes, bike lanes, extra lanes, etc. -- here’s my suggestion for the use of the lanes we have on the bridge. It would move traffic along faster and reduce the cutting back and forth to get in the proper lane at the end of the bridge.
From Monday to Friday in the morning (6 to 9 am) the middle lane on the Champlain bridge would be for cars going east on Sir John A. MacDonald, and the right lane should be for cars going straight on Island Park Drive or west on Sir John A. MacDonald. Then from 3 to 6 pm in the afternoon, the middle lane would be used for cars turning left on Lucerne Blvd., and the right lane would be for cars going right on Lucerne Blvd and going straight to the Aylmer Rd.
The “High Occupancy Vehicle” lanes would not be in effect between these traffic hours. Right now, morning or afternoon, many single-person cars use the centre lane and have to cut in to the right lane. The rest of the time the centre lane is used as a passing lane.
