More trash-talking the tram -- or a vote?
The Bulletin d'Aylmer has been very good at keeping the debate about the tram proposals before the public eye. We have read every opinion, and we have seen all the drawings showing a leisurely, hyper-modern, uncrowded train with two or three people waiting and admiring the lovely landscaping. Now, how about some reality? At commute times -- each train is packed to the gills, with crowds waiting and pushing outside, trying to get on. Look at our main bus routes during commute times today and picture the line-ups.
However, I think it is time to launch a public referendum on a multi-billion dollar tram line, ready in about 20 years, vs a modest increase in budget to add more buses, and make them electric. The unused billion dollars could go to our other big problems, from affordable housing to a municipal income supplement. But let's vote on it.
