More extensive changes suggested

City says stop signs not the answer at Lattion-Beaulac

Residents near Lattion Street, where it intersects Beaulac Road, asked the city in 2016 to install stop signs at that intersection. They argued that the corner is  hazardous and that stop signs would improve safety for pedestrians and motorists.  

A bicycle path also runs across that intersection, creating a safety issue for pedestrians and cyclists. Residents complained about the encroachment of vehicles into the waiting area of the multi-use path.

However, Gatineau’s analysis indicates that stop signs are not the solution at this intersection.

Aylmer ward Councillor Josée Lacasse explained that “the installation of bollards in 2016 was helpful, but did not entirely resolve the issue. The addition of bollards near Beaulac Road could improve the situation but it risks impeding  turns by STO buses.” Lacasse added, “Stop signs would not resolve the issue of vehicles encroaching into the space reserved for pedestrians and cyclists.”

The City is recommending extending the curb on Lattion Street, re-routing the bike path to have more separation from the road, and tightening the radius of the curvature of the curb in order to restrict high-speed turns. 

There is no word on when or if this work is scheduled.
