Minority gov’ts work!
I am very pleased with the election results – if we do not have a representative government, at least we have this. History has shown Canadians that minority governments can work – and cooperation gets good work done. The parties are more respectful to each other. Past minority governments have delivered some of Canada’s biggest accomplishments, including universal healthcare, the Canada Pension Plan, and marriage equality – to name just a few. It’s good for democracy. Under our broken first-past-the-post electoral system, governments can have 100% of power with less than half the vote. The wishes of the majority are actually shut out. But if the Liberals, NDP and Greens work together, the majority of voters will actually be represented in parliament.
