Mike Duggan ventures into federal politics
Deschênes District Councillor, Mike Duggan, hopes to represent the Conservative Party of Canada (CPC) in the Hull-Aylmer riding for the October federal election.
In the next few weeks, the municipal official, with a master’s degree in environmental studies, will know if he will be the official CPC candidate. The Party hopes to have a candidate before the month of March. A campaign manager is already in place and, to date, Mr Duggan is the only one who has indicated his interest.
Aylmer-Hull has never favoured the CPC. In the 2015 elections, the Conservatives ranked third in the riding, with approximately 7% of the vote. The current MP, Greg Fergus (Liberal Party), had obtained over 50% of the vote in 2015.
“Clearly, this will be a race between Fergus and Duggan,” declares Mr Duggan. “Mr Scheer, leader of the Conservative Party, is well respected and he hopes to bring the party more towards the centre, with less talk on sensitive subjects,” he says; “the goal is to have a balanced budget and to make promises we have the intention of delivering on.”
If elected, Mr Duggan says he will resign from his position at the Ville de Gatineau. He will remain councillor and member of the municipal council throughout the electoral campaign.
Re-elected in November 2017, this is Mr Duggan’s second mandate on the municipal scene. From 2013 to 2017, he represented the Lucerne District. (Trans.: CB)
