LETTER
Media bias?
As I watch this federal election campaign unfold I am suprised to find myself looking so critically at the media and its coverage. I say surprised because I have always thought Canada’s media was professional. But following the televised leaders’ debates, I am so disappointed that the media seems to focus on the quickest point, the easiest story, the statement with the most drama – and content falls by the side. Best example has been the media’s fascination with the NDP leader’s musing about Law 21 – why, when, and how a federal government might get involved. The reporters kept asking exactly the same question!
Overall, their coverage is to treat the campaign like a sporting event. The journalists take themselves so seriously, as if they are defending the nation – and then focus on so much trivia! I understand that newsrooms are under-staffed and that it is difficult to respond immediately following a debate, but more preparation might have given them something to hang their analysis on.
Now I wonder if the media doesn’t have an agenda. I thought this was the area of the conspiracy nuts – but, for example, why replay over and over the few times when the politicians were talking over each other? That never happens? It seemed as if the reporters were determined to show us how incompetent and out of touch are our political leaders. If true, they are led often there by the media!
