I support the Open Letter to William Amos

 

I commend Katherine Fletcher for taking a stand against the Near Surface Disposal Facility project at Chalk River and for taking the position that the Trudeau government should have taken upon forming a government: put the environment first in policy decisions.

The way to demonstrate this is to create an independent body to review Environmental Impact Assessments for nuclear projects. As pointed out by hundreds of concerned citizens, the CNSC does not have organizational independence from the Minister of Natural Resources. who oversees the funding of federal nuclear projects.  

For the love of the Ottawa River, and the region's brand as a place of  whitewater fun, big forests, great fishing and outdoor sports, a brand which can be tarnished by creating a massive nuclear dump which many experts believe is ill-conceived and will add to Chalk River's toxic legacy, I ask citizens to stand up and vehemently oppose this project.

I also ask MP William Amos to join this cause and make a stand against this American-led consortium that has taken an incredibly short-term and profit-driven approach to decommissioning projects at Chalk River, and is asking the Government of Canada to pay $600 million for a dump which is only a facility in name. It is a dump, plain and simple.

As taxpayers, we have a say. The Minister of Natural Resources should call a halt to this project and ask CNL management to go back to the drawing board and devise a plan to move the site at least  25 km from the Ottawa River and to create a more robust, state-of-the-art facility, even if it costs more.
