LETTER
Hydro Quebec & my library card
I don't own a car so I don't have a driver's license. I had to renew my library card earlier this summer. Even though I've lived in Aylmer and had a library card for over 40 years, even though I have a passport, a health card, and an STO bus pass, all with my picture, even though I have a book of cheques from the Caisse Populaire, with my name, address, and phone number, none of this is good enough for the Gatineau Library, Aylmer branch. But they will accept a hydro bill, so once again I can read.
I think the library is a wonderful place. I'd be lost without it, but perhaps getting a card could be made easier or perhaps the city could give out citizenship cards to those without a driver's license. In the meantime, I keep an old Hydro bill tucked away in my purse for identification purposes. Too bad I can't use it at the American border.
Joy Ruttan,
Gatineau (Aylmer)
