Greg Fergus appointed Parliamentary Secretary and sworn into the Privy Council

The Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, appointed Greg Fergus, member of Parliament for Hull-Aylmer, as Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister and to the President of the Treasury Board, December 9. Fergus has been a member of the House of Commons since 2015.
In addition, Fergus is now a member of the Privy Council. Fergus and colleague Rob Ophilant, member of parliament for Don Valley West, were sworn into the Privy Council in a ceremony conducted by the Honourable Mary May Simon, Governor General of Canada. The Privy Council supports the Prime Minister and Cabinet. The council helps the government implement its vision, goals and decisions. “I am honoured to be appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister and to the President of the Treasury Board. I welcome these responsibilities with gratitude, excitement, and hope. I look forward to working with my colleagues on the key priorities for the 44th Parliament,” said Fergus.
Parliamentary secretaries are chosen by the Prime Minister. The responsibilities include assisting ministers with House of Commons business and department duties. Secretaries are not members of the Cabinet and do not play a formal role in the decision making process; they support the ministers in their work.
