------- Greed -- or cooperation?
Earlier this month a Bulletin editorial pointed out the contradiction in business associations wanting more government funds to help them manage through the Covid crisis -- despite the associations' long practise of criticizing government intervention! They claim that business individuals have better judgement and more facts at their disposal than governments themselves. We also have Conservative Party politicians claiming the same thing, as they pick a new leader. They can't have it both ways.
Frankly, if business leaders had the ability to look past their own self-interest we would not have had the terrible 2008 financial crisis, and each downturn, every ten years or so. It is said that the biggest threat to capitalism are the capitalists themselves.
The Covid crisis today is a good opportunity to re-set the process. Indeed, we may not make it through this crisis if we do not do so. No more complaints of government "interference", please -- it is saving our country.
