Government, Hydro, wake up!
A number of years ago, Transport Quebec rammed an access road behind our property. The only ameliorating factor was the fifteen-foot strip of bushes and trees they left that provided our yard with privacy and welcome shade.
However, this August, Hydro Quebec cut down many of these shrubs, and butchered most of the trees. While I understand the need to clear hydro lines of potential threats, most of these trees and shrubs, including ones that were on our property well removed from the lines, posed no such threat. When we complained to Hydro and the company that did the cutting, we were assured that the trees were a very resilient species that would grow back (a process that would take years).
Ironically, the primary excuse they used was that Hydro had so badly butchered the trees, the city had no choice but to remove them! In an age of global warming, where we should be doing everything possible to protect trees, government and business will still use any excuse to cut them down. They may talk about caring for the environment, but the reality is that they just don’t give a damn!
