Quebec municipalities benefit

Generous internship grants 

Quebec cities can benefit from internships worth $3,000 each. In 2019, 21 municipalities in Quebec will receive this financial assistance. The contest, entitled “I work for my city”, aims to cover part of the costs incurred by hiring an intern and “encourage municipalities to call on the next generation”. Another goal is to encourage young people to enter the municipal labour market once they have completed their studies. Internships offered by the selected municipalities must be for a minimum of 10 weeks. 

For the 2019 edition of the competition, the City is “evaluating the possibilities of hosting an intern”. A request has not yet been sent.  

The project is led by the Association des directeurs généraux des municipalités du Québec (ADGMQ), the Corporation des officiers municipaux agréés du Québec (COMAQ) and the Union des municipalités du Québec (UMQ). The UMQ has been in existence for 10 years now and brings together local governments from all over the province.  

Quebec municipalities have until March 15 to apply. Winners will be announced in mid-April. 

Gatineau was awarded a scholarship last year for an internship in the Environmental Services Department. It has applied for a UMQ internship scholarship every year since 2016. However, it had not been awarded a scholarship in 2017. 

For equal file quality, the selection committee will prioritize cities that did not receive a grant in 2018. Applications for new internships will also be encouraged.

For the first time this year, two scholarships will be awarded for the hiring of college-level interns. Since 2012, the “I work for my city” program has awarded $330,000 in scholarships, which is equivalent to funding 109 projects in 89 municipalities and RCMs across the province.
