Gatineau police officer arrested for assault

A Gatineau Police officer in his thirties was recently arrested on charges of assault. According to a press release issued by Gatineau Police (SPVG) on July 20, police responded to a call about an altercation between two ex-spouses where the perpetrator (a Gatineau police officer) allegedly assaulted the female victim. The statement clarified that the officer was not on duty when the assault occurred. 

 

Following the arrest, the man was taken into custody but was then released on several conditions, including appearing in court and a promise not to contact the victim in any way.

 

The SPVG said the arrested police officer had been relieved of his police duties and assigned to administrative work for the time being. The statement added that the victim’s identity and the name of the police officer weren’t publicized due to the nature of the incident.

 

Noting that the SPVG’s Division des normes professionnelles et des affaires internes – Professional Standards and Internal Affairs Division had previously investigated the matter, it added that a file about the incident was sent to Quebec’s Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions, who determined that the perpetrator would be charged with assault under section 622(b) of the Criminal Code. The SPVG released no further information about the incident to protect the identity of the victim.
