Front Street fences in Old Aylmer removed
A series of fences just south-east of the Front and Brook Streets intersection has been removed by public works because the fencing was judged to be in “advanced disrepair”. No new fences have replaced them.
The fences date prior to the city merger; this small green space, which has no name, is owned by the city. “The fences were installed because a rail track once passed there,” said a city official.
The Aylmer resident who reported their removal is worried that an old problem could repeat itself at this location.
“Before the creation of this green space and the fences, many vehicles drove over the asphalt edge to park. The same type of fence is on Arthur-Croteau and Raoul-Roy, near Parc des Cèdres, and along the edge of many green spaces in Ward 1 (Aylmer). They clearly serve to delimit the areas and prevent drivers from parking on the grass,” noted the resident.
The anonymous resident argues that the fences were no more worn out than other ones in Aylmer and wonders if the city plans to build a barrier to prevent parking on the grass, where the train tracks were years ago. However, the city says they have planted trees there and will plant more next summer.
