Friends of Wychwood launch friendly tree campaign
The Friends of Wychwood residents association is, in a way, returning to their roots by launching a three-week awareness campaign to emphasize the importance of preserving trees in their unique neighbourhood.
“When the association formed 30 years ago, its main mandate was to protect the trees in the neighbourhood,” said Christiane Thérien, Friends of Wychwood President.
The association printed more than 120 large panels displayed in the Wychwood neighbourhood. The association also produced small lawn signs for residents.
The goal is “to express our pride in having such majestic trees in our neighbourhood and thus preventing them from disappearing with time,” added Thérien.
The Friends of Wychwood is also looking to inform its members of the latest developments regarding their project to preserve and showcase the natural and wooded character of Wychwood. The board will provide members an update during their next AGM on October 16, 9:30 am, at Bistro Mexicana. This is the project which was presented at the 2015 AGM.
“We have been working with the city for the past year on this 11-point file. We have an upcoming meeting in late September with them,” said Thérien.
The goal of this initiative is to ensure that new construction integrates trees and space and not the opposite.
“We want the city to take into account first and foremost the presence of trees when giving out a construction permit,” added Thérien. “You know, people settle in Wychwood for the lovely trees. We even had a builder ask us the best way to protect the trees for a construction project. We were thrilled the company approached us and we encourage all builders to do the same,” Thérien told the Bulletin.
