LETTER
Free school lunches
It’s unthinkable, living in a land of plenty, that there are children in our area who go to school with nothing to eat at lunchtime. Someone said to me, “Obviously, the parents must have just forgotten.” But I’ve learned that isn’t the case. How do I know? Because of the good work done by a small group of volunteers who, since 2003, have been raising money to buy healthy school lunches from licensed caterers to help these children from families in need.
The Hungry to Help Corporation aims to help by providing a free hot lunch at dinner-time. The parents’ consent is required and the service is confidential.
A single meal costs between $5-6. In 2015-2016, Hungry to Help spent more than $15,500 in providing 2,801 meals to underprivileged elementary school children. I feel that I must do whatever I can to support this worthy cause.
I’ll be going to their next fundraiser on Saturday, 12 November, from 6-10 pm, at Eardley Elementary School in Aylmer. There will be a fashion show featuring high-class stores in Aylmer and Hull and a silent auction, featuring a hockey stick signed by Jean Belliveau, authenticated.
The tickets are $25 and are available here: https://fashionshowsilentauction.eventbrite.ca or you can contact the President Pam Taylor at 819-328-0452 or Danielle Hébert, Secretary, at 819-210-4444.
