LETTER
Free buses?
I read your editorial on free transit, and I hope the authorities will consider this proposal. It works elsewhere. And since about a full quarter of greenhouse gas emissions come from transportation, anything that will reduce the number of cars (and trucks) on the road will benefit all of us. Cutting fares may increase the need for tax subsidies to STO, but this might just equal the costs heading our way to reduce pollution and climate change. I urge our politicians to consider this, while they are considering the billion dollars or so needed for a light rail system. As you also mention, I think the talk about light rail to Aylmer is a way to not talk about improving the transit system we already have.
