False democracy in Quebec

 

I was glad to read Fred Ryan' editorial in the Pontiac Journal last week. M.Ryan indicates that the best way to improve our Quebec is to introduce a proportional voting system that will allow true democracy to be in place for the decision process of our provincial government. He hit the bullseye.
    Unfortunately, the law project 39 proposing a change to our voting system has been pushed aside by Premier Legault and his CAQ's strategic team. What a shame when politicians pursue their own power and glory in lieu of true democracy. We deserve better!
    After that, these same old-fashioned politicians are complaining why citizens don't care anymore about politics. In 2018, more than a third of the Quebec population decided not to vote. Why? Because they don't believe the politicians who have more concern about themselves and their party instead of really addressing the issues in a constructive and inclusive way. A vote for a third party is useless with our current voting system. Every vote counts? Not in Quebec.
    Using the proportional voting system would alleviate most of the bad strategic decisions and the high risk of corruption that comes with our current political system. The CAQ with 25% of the total voting population in 2018 (including the non-voters) and 37,4% of the vote had close to 60% of the seats (74/125), this is simply not democratic and they shouldn't be allowed to govern without consensus.
