Ebola in Aylmer? 

 

It is quite a scare to imagine such a cosmic tragedy in our community. Please, before you become too 

distraught, the answer is ‘No’, there are no cases of Ebola in Aylmer! But Aylmer is involved and has a role to play. Ebola is not just a local issue it is a worldwide issue.

 

Mark Wright, President of the Aylmer Civitan club reports that, “Some of our club members are very active in working with other Civitan clubs in West Africa to help them fight Ebola. In particular, some of us work virtually every day with the Monrovia Civitan club in Liberia.” Mr. Wright added “In August, 2014 we helped with the formation of Project EPIC (Ebola Prevention and Information Campaign) under the driving force of Civitan Isaac Brown, President of the Monrovia Civitan club. This involved travelling to rural communities, explaining the threat of Ebola to villagers, teaching prevention methods, providing supplies and antiseptics, and conducting cleanups. This work is ongoing and cannot be addressed without outside resources and funding.”

 

The devastation of this disease cannot be over-stated. But what is visible in the disease lies hidden in the aftermath. Over 100 orphans, and another 350 impacted families, widows and survivors in their area have been identified and registered by Civitan Monrovia. “We have been providing some funding to help feed and bring the beginning of hope to these people, who have not had any other aid. This is a life and death situation. Action is required here and now.” 

 

EPIC continues but has added ‘Fostering Hope’ a program to address these victims of Ebola. What is needed is outside funding to bring help to these children and survivors. We are really at the very beginning of establishing funding. This is a public appeal for donations.
