Drivers needed for Meals on Wheels

Despite new energy at Aylmer’s Meals on Wheels, a shortage of drivers is in effect. “Our clientele is increasing as there seems to be more demand for the service,” said Mary Ann Latimer, Aylmer Meals on Wheels President.

Meals on Wheels delivers more than 100 meals a week to over 40 Aylmerites who are unable to cook for themselves. The organization relies on volunteers -- cooks, board members, and drivers.

“We need to find enough money to prepare the meals, and we need to find volunteers to deliver them. We end up with a waiting list because we don’t have enough delivery people,” said Latimer, who took over the operation several months ago when Cal Mott stepped down, after more than a dozen years at the helm. “It can be demanding, but they asked me if I could take over and I could not say no. It’s a good cause and I had to step in to help them,” she told the Bulletin.

The service needs drivers to come in to the Aylmer Legion on Bancroft Street at around 9:30-9:45 am, to deliver a couple of meals in and around Aylmer.

“Many of our drivers are older people, retirees. We ask anyone interested to come and have a cup of coffee with us at the Legion, any morning, and talk with our current drivers,” said Latimer; “then they’ll know what to expect.”
